Spacers for using my Special Tall Grippers on Nova Cole Jaws – FREE Shipping in USA!!

The tall grippers I make have a flange at the bottom. That flange is required to provide strength to resist tipping when the chuck is tightened to hold a bowl or other woodturning. This flange can cause an issue with bowls that have a lip that is not rolled over away from the gripper. These spacers are a solution to that issue.
The spacers are made of wood with a small keeper at one end. That keeper fits into the pocket in the Cole jaw for the mounting screws. They lay down on the jaws and lift the bowl off of the jaw face, clearing the gripper flange.
To use you just place the chuck down on your work bench, drop each spacer on the Cole jaw with the keeper in the screw hole pocket, and put your bowl in place. As you tighten the jaws the spacers move with it and once the bowl is secured the spacers are captured and stay in place. Even if you decide to use the tailstock to add additional holding security the spacers assure the bowl won’t move down towards the chuck.
No tools are required to use these spacers, but if you want to install them with the chuck on the lathe instead of on your bench you can just use some double-stick tape to keep them on the jaws until you mount the bowl.
I made these to be used on Nova Cole jaws and have not tried them on any other system. Unless the jaw mounting screws are recessed in the mounting hole these will not work with another system.
